こうもりは漢字で蝙蝠と書き、中国では「福」と同じ音で縁起がいい動物とされ、陶磁器のモチーフとしてよく描かれる。白抜きの丸窓に、こうもりが上下で逆向きに並んでいるさまは、コミカルでなんともかわいらしい。器はやや厚手で、文様も簡素であり、江戸後期の古伊万里の感じをよく伝えている。
Bats are believed to be lucky animal in China because the Chinese pronunciation is similar to fortune. It is comical that the upper and lower bats sit in opposite ways and are seen from circular windows. The cup is relatively thick and the drawing is rough, which is characteristic of the 19th century Imari.
