荒川鉱山 Arakawa Mine
秋田の鉱山跡探訪シリーズのつづき。荒川鉱山は江戸〜明治・大正期に栄えた銅山で、1940 年に閉山、現在は公園として、バイクやカートのレース場として利用されている。
Arakawa is an abandoned copper mine in Daisen City, Akita, that was active in Edo to Meiji and Taisho period. After closure in 1940, the site is used as a park and a race track of motorcycle.
荒川鉱山跡をたずねるには、大盛館（たいせいかん）という資料館を起点にするとよい。JR奥羽線・羽後境駅から徒歩1分にある羽後交通バスの営業所から、稲沢線に乗って15分ほどの川前（かわまえ）で下車してすぐのところにある。稲沢線の終点である角館駅前から乗っても40分ほど。ただしバス便は「土日運休」なので、休みの日は境駅からタクシー3000円か、徒歩2時間になる。なお去年の大雨の影響で荒川鉱山までの道は通行止めだったが、今月はじめからはクルマではいれるようになった。
I recommend to begin a trip to Arakawa mine from Taisei-Kan museum near the bus stop, Kawamae, to which it takes 15 minutes from Sakai bus station that is close to Ugo-Sakai rail station of JR Ou Line. It is possible to ride the same bus from Kakunodate in the opposite direction (about 40 minutes). The bus line is not operated on every Saturday and Sunday, so the public transport is only taxi on weekends.

大盛館は、荒川鉱山に関連する資料館と、荒川鉱山出身の作家、松田解子の記念館とを兼ねている。たいへん充実した展示内容で、荒川鉱山のみならず、近隣の宮田又や畑（はた）鉱山の鉱石や、鉱山町の歴史などを知ることができる。とくにおもしろかったのは自然銅をつかって描いた松の絵。金属銅の茶色と孔雀石の緑色とをうまくつかっている。からみ（銅の製錬途中ででるカス、スラグ）でつくった大黒様の像も、いかにも鉱山町ならではである。
Taisei-Kan is a museum of Arakawa mine and is also a memorial hall of Tokiko Matsuda (1905-2004), a novelist born at Arakawa mining town. I am impressed at a picture drawn with native copper. A statue made with Karami (slug) is also interesting.
大盛館から荒川鉱山跡までは徒歩25分ほど。ルートは2つあるが、まず旧道を歩いてみよう。ここはトロッコ軌道が通っていた道である。大盛大橋をわたって左の側道をくだり、面日（おもにち）集落へ向かう。道なりにカーブすると、大盛小学校跡がある。鉱山で働いていた人たちが住んでいたのはこのあたり。いまは杉林になっていて、当時の面影はない。さまざまな遺構を見ながら進むと、昨年の大雨で路盤が崩れた箇所がある（よってクルマは通行できない）ので、気をつけて迂回する。橋をわたると、鉱山の中心部である。
It takes about 25 minutes from Taisei-Kan to Arakawa mine. There are two routes, and now we walk on the old road. Passing through Omonichi, there appears the site of Taisei elementary school. People working at the mine lived around there, but we only see trees. The road is destroyed in part by a heavy rain last year, so we must walk carefully (automobiles cannot go this way). After walking across a bridge, we see the central area of the mine.

まず砂カス山の異様な景観が目をひく。上から水をかけて、銅イオンを溶出させ、廃石に含まれる銅を回収したのだそうだ。選鉱場やシックナーの跡、煙突の一部などが残されている。近年まで坑道の一部を開放していたが、崩落があっていまははいれない。今後もはいれる見込みはないという。坑道入口からは冷たい風が吹き出していた。付近の荒川では水晶や黄鉄鉱などの硫化鉱物もみられる。何人か河原で遊んでいる人がいた。
A rare scenery of Suna-Kasu (abandoned rocks) is impressing. In the past water over the rock hills is collected and processed to obtain copper. A part of tunnels was open for public until recently but now closed because of collapse. There are rock crystals and some sulfide minerals around the river.
帰りは本道をとおる。左手に墓地がある。ここでなくなった人のお墓で、近くのお寺が、いまも定期的に供養しているようである。当時の鉱山労働は過酷であり、珪肺（ヨロケ）や事故で早死にするものが多かったという。煙害・鉱害もおこった。いっぽうで、秋田市内より３年早く電灯がともり、劇場や病院もあった。荒川は、明治の殖産興業の時代を象徴する町だったといえる。大盛館にわかれをつげたら、宮田又、畑、亀山盛、日三市など、周辺の鉱山跡に足をのばすもよし、羽後境駅に帰る途中にある道の駅に寄るのもいいだろう。荒川鉱山跡はアクセスがよく、比較的安全なので、子どもの鉱物採集、歴史学習に最適である。
Returning back through another road, we see the cemetery for those who worked at the mine. On the one hand, the work was so hard that the workers didn't live long because of pulmonary silicosis and accident. There occurred pollution problems. On the other hand, electricity was available three years earlier than in the capital of Akita prefecture. There were theater and hospital. Arakawa town is symbolic of national encouragement movement of industry in the late 19th century. There are several small mines around there; Miyatamata, Hata, Kisamori, and Hisaichi. Arakawa mine is a good place for education of mineralogy and history.

追記、
堀秀道氏の「楽しい鉱物図鑑２」の赤銅鉱のところで、この自然銅をつかって描いた松の絵について言及されていた。氏によると、松竹梅の絵があって、梅が針状の赤銅鉱（針銅鉱）で表現されていたそうである。同じ作品があったかどうか、確認できないが、ちゃんと見ておけばよかった。。。
