夏場所13日目をマス席最後方で観戦。朝乃山は勝てば平幕優勝に望みをつなぎ、栃ノ心は大関復帰を決める、という、どちらも負けられない熱い戦いだったが、なんとも後味の悪い幕切れになった。勝負に水を差す、とはまさにこのことである。

朝乃山は前に出て、寄り切ろうというところだったが、栃ノ心は持ち前の怪力で朝乃山の頭をおさえつけて突き落とす。栃ノ心逆転勝利、に見えたが、かかとが俵を割った、と物言いがあり、６分間という異例の長さの協議の末、軍配さしちがえで朝乃山が勝った。

後味の悪さ、それは審判の協議があまりに長すぎた、ということだ。合理的に考えれば、人間の目よりも、客観的に証拠がのこるビデオによる判定を優先すべきだが、どうもそうならなかったらしい。ビデオでも判定が難しいならば、判定不能により取り直しにすればいい。人間の判断には、先入観や思い込み、錯覚がまぎれこみがちで、後味が悪い。

ともかくこの一番に関しては、なぜに６分間も協議が長引いたのか、なにを話し合っていたのか、結局ひとりの意見がごり押しされて、他の意見がうやむやにされたのか、真相を知りたい。はっきり言って、大相撲は、旧態依然としていて、非合理的なことが多い。すくなくとも「スポーツ」の根本である、勝負を決めること、反則行為の裁定、などは客観的で合理的であるべきだ。現に大相撲にはビデオ審判がいるにもかかわらず、その意見が軽視されるというのは、むしろ本末転倒なこと。土俵下の審判（と控えの力士）は、人間の目で見て軍配に疑問を感じたら、物言いをつける、あとはビデオ再生をして客観的に判断する、どちらが負けた、という積極的証拠がないなら取り直す、これでいいのではないか。

I watched Grand Sumo Tournament Day 13th from the furthest masu box from the ring (dohyo). It was an exciting match as Asanoyama proceeds to his first championship if he wins, and Tochinoshi comes back to ozeki position with one more win. However, I had a bad aftertaste about the ending. Asanoyama drives Tochinoshin to the rim of dohyo, but Tochinoshin tries to push down Asanoyama. Most of the spectators believed Tochinoshin's win but saw the opposite after a 6-minute long debate between referees surrounding dohyo about whether Tochinoshin's heel went out of dohyo. The bad aftertaste comes from the exceptionally long debate between five referees. It is reasonable to judge by the instant replay. If it is difficult to judge, the referee should call a rematch (torinaoshi). However, this was not the case. I suspect that one referee persisted his belief that Tochinoshin's heel touched the dohyo's sand though the others not. Grand Sumo is too traditional to catch up with the modern rationality. It is reasonable that one of referees raises an objection if he has doubts about gyoji's judge and the referees discuss based on the video, and call torinaoshi if it is too difficult to judge.
