尾去沢の閃亜鉛鉱 Sphalerite from Osarizawa

石英で覆われた緑泥石主体の母岩の小片に、薄茶色のべっ甲亜鉛がくっつく。すでに紹介した尾去沢産の標本（１、２）のいずれとも色合いが違っていて興味深い。平らな結晶面は、単純な八面体というよりは、むしろ斜方十二面体の一部を構成しているように思うが、よくわからない。古い文献（日本鉱物誌など）によると、尾去沢の閃亜鉛鉱は「径 8 cm を超ゆ」とある。そこまで大きくはないが、なかなか立派な結晶である。

尾去沢鉱山は、金・銀・銅鉱の生産が主力であって、亜鉛（や鉛）を本格的に採掘したのは、長い鉱山の歴史の中でも戦後になってからである。にもかかわらず閃亜鉛鉱の結晶標本が、黄銅鉱などにくらべて多く残されているのは、やはりべっこう亜鉛の魅力によるものだろう。

Brown sphalerite crystal is attached to a piece of green host rock covered by quartz. It is interesting that the color is different from either of previously shown specimens from Osarizawa (1, 2). Flat crystal surfaces seem to show a part of dodecahedron. Big sphalerite crystal of 8 cm size used to be found in Osarizawa according to old books. The main ores in Osarizawa have been gold, silver and copper. It was after the Pacific War that zinc and lead began to be commercially mined. Nevertheless sphalerite specimen from Osarizawa is relatively plenty probably because of its attractive translucency.
