相良人形：力士と子ども Sagara Clay Dolls: Sumo Wrestler and Child
右の角力とりは山形県立博物館のデータベースに類似品（資料番号＝6H003820）があるので、江戸時代後期にいまの山形県米沢市でつくられた相良人形、もしくは同データベースの解説文にもあるとおり寺沢人形（幕末期に相良家の親戚筋である寺沢家の人がつくったと一部愛好家が推定している土人形）の可能性が高い。左の団扇を持った童子も、お顔の感じなどからしてやはり相良人形（もしくは寺沢人形）とおもわれる。
I am not sure where these two clay dolls were made. The sumo wrestler is likely to be an old Sagara doll, Yamagata, Japan, because a similar one is found in a database of the Yamagata Prefectural Museum's collection. It might be a Terasawa doll as described in the database's comment. The boy might also be an old Sagara (or Terasawa) doll made in the mid 19th century.
やさしそうなお顔をしたこの力士人形は、全面に胡粉が塗られていて艶がある。通常の胡粉より褐色がかっていて、力士の血色のよさがよくあらわれている。化粧廻しの色は、古い相良人形でよくつかわれる緑青である。その上に金泥で輪繋ぎ文様が描かれるが、ほとんど剥げてしまっているのは残念だ。ただ製作はたいへんていねいで、お顔だちも整っており、古人形の風格がある。底は粘土でふさがれている。耳に穴があいているが、これは素焼きしたときに破損しないための空気穴の役割を果たしたとおもわれる。そしてその穴がなにか繊維状の素材で埋められていて、人物の髪の毛（もみあげ？）を表現しているようだ。この技法は相良人形ではしばしばもちいられる（たとえば以前紹介した「お囃子」や「犬乗り童子」）。
The smiling sumo wrestler is entirely painted with a glossy gofun, which is made from white sea shells. A slightly brownish gofun color might represent the wrestler's vitality. The skirt-like cloth is decorated with malachite green. It is sad that the gold ring pattern on the cloth has mostly been worn off. There are holes at his ears and some fibrous material grows from them. The bottom part is filled with clay, so the hole might be a vent not to be broken in firing.
こちらの童子も全体が白い胡粉できっちり覆われていて、前掛けの結び目もていねいに描かれている。うちわの縁どりは緑青。空気穴が見当たらないが、あとから埋めたか、あるいはこの程度の小さい人形はふつうに焼けるのかもしれない。団扇を手にした土人形はけっこう類例が多い。前掲の山形県立博物館のデータベースにも団扇をもった相良人形が確認できる（たとえば資料番号=6H003852）。
これらの古人形はセットというわけではないが、並べてみると、まるで角力とりをその付き人が団扇であおいでいるようで、夏巡業のほのぼのしたひとこまを思わせる。
The boy is also entirely decorated with white gofun. The bottom part is filled up, but there are no holes in this small clay doll. There are various examples of old clay doll who has a fan in hand. These two dolls were produced not as a pair, but it looks like an attendant boy fans a sumo wrestler in a summer day.
