土人形 Clay Dolls
先日、昼ごはんのあとちょっと町ぶらしたら、かわいい土人形をみつけた。

尾崎人形 Osaki Doll
こういうのを「へたうま」というのか。おなかの毛とか、おしりとか、愛らしい。
佐賀県神埼市に古くから伝わる土人形で、一時途絶えていたが、近年復興され、こうして東京の店でも買えるぐらい人気だという。尾崎人形には20種ほどが伝わっているが、中でも鳩笛（地元ではテテップウという）が特徴的でこどもの疫病をはらうお守りとしても愛されてきたという（「しおり」より）。この力士人形は土鈴になっていてふると音がする。古くからある赤ちゃんのおもちゃ、といったところだろう。
This will be a "skillfully poor" craft. What lovely belly and backside! The Osaki doll has been made in Kanzaki city, Saga prefecture, since hundreds of years ago. It was once discontinued, but some local people recently revived the tradition. There are about twenty types in the old Osaki dolls. The most famous one is pigeon whistle (ocarina?), which was given to children as a charm to avoid disease. This sumo wrestler is a clay bell, which would be given to a baby in earlier times.
こういった郷土人形、郷土玩具のたぐいは全国いたるところでつくられたが、近代化の波のなかで廃れたものも多い。それでもそのいくつかは現在に伝えられ、地方の土産物屋なんかにいくと見かけることがある。いま手元におなじような土人形がいくつかあるので、以下に紹介してみよう。なおすべて秋田のものである。
There have been many clay dolls and toys in Japan. I would like to show my collection of Japanese clay dolls, which are all made in Akita prefecture.
中山人形 Nakayama Doll
天神人形は菅原道真を神格化した神像で、大昔からある天神信仰と結びついて全国に広まった。とくにこどもが生まれるとこの人形を授けて健康を願った。いまでも多くの産地で個性豊かな天神人形をみることができる。中山土人形は秋田県横手市（旧平鹿町）のもので、明治頃から代々人形づくりが伝わっているという。
Tenjin doll is a defication of Sugawara-no-Michizane, who was a nobleman in the late 9th century and has widely been respected by Japanese people. When a baby (especially boy) was born, people gave it the Tenjin doll hoping its health. The Nakayama doll has been made in Yokote city (former Hiraka town) since the mid 19th century.
八橋人形 Yabase Doll
秋田犬 Akita-inu（高さ height 7.8 cm）
おかっぱの女の子と秋田犬。秋田市内で古来つくられてきた土人形だったが、さいきん職人の方が亡くなり、あとを継ぐものがなくて途絶えそうになっていたところ、市民の手で再び人形づくりがおこなわれている。上の２つはともに再興された八橋人形である。この手の土人形は全国各地に産地があるが、京都の伏見人形の流れをくむものが多い。八橋人形も江戸時代に伏見人形の職人から製法が伝えられたという。
The Yabase clay doll has been made in Akita city. After the last craftman passing away, volunteers made an attempt to continue the tradition. The above two are the recent works. The Yabase doll is, as well as most Japanese local clay dolls, affected by the Fushimi doll in Kyoto.
北浦土人形 Kitaura Clay Doll
馬 Horse（高さ height 7.8 cm）
どちらも土鈴で、ふるといい音がする。唐草文様のふろしきをしょっているのがかわいい。伝統的な郷土人形のながれをくんだものだが、むしろ現代の作家さんによる創作人形というべきものかもしれない。作者は杉山ハヤト氏で、仙北市田沢湖に工房「北の仲間たち」をかまえている。
Both are clay bells. The Kitaura clay doll is a modern craft work by Sugiyama Hayato, presiding "Kita no Nakama Tachi" at Tazawako, Senboku city.
