Marcasite from Osarizawa
Marcasite crystals on a piece of black bedrock with some quartz and chalcopyrite. A well-crystalized specimen of marcasite is generally rare but has been known in Osarizawa since the old days. The crystals are mostly twinned. A pentagonal structure can be seen, probably caused by repeated twin. If there is a competition of tendency of twinning, marcasite would be ranked at a higher position as well as cerussite.
Marcasite crystals. The circle's diameter is 20 mm.
From Wada’s Minerals of Japan (3rd edition). The upper left is an example of single crystal and the others are twins from Osarizawa mine but the lower right one, which is from Makukawa, Fukushima prefecture. Makukawa is known to have almost pure marcasite veins.
From "Atlas der Krystallformen". The character f and n are the same as l(011) and e(101). The Osarizawa's marcasite mostly looks similar to Fig. 32 and 33.
