尾太の方鉛鉱 Galena from Oppu

四角い方鉛鉱の結晶が寄せ集まって、現代アートの作品のような標本になっている。黄鉄鉱の粒が点々とのっていて、これはまるでティンカーベルの粉みたいだ。黒い塊状の閃亜鉛鉱もすこし伴う。方鉛鉱の表面はつるんとしていて、鈍く輝いている。結晶の一部は軸の方向によって成長の速さが違ったのか、かなり細長い直方体のものがある。また結晶の面の中央部がえぐれているのもあって、これを骸晶という。立方体の稜の部分の成長速度が速すぎたため、面の部分の成長が遅れて、とりのこされてしまったことに起因するといわれている。岩塩（方鉛鉱もおなじ塩化ナトリウム構造）、ビスマスの人工結晶、水晶などにも同様の現象が見られる。

尾太鉱山が閉山する少し前、1970年頃の産出品。茨城県守谷のタケダ鉱物標本で購入。こういう立体的な結晶のあつまりが晶洞内に形成されるのは、かなりまれなことだとおもうが、尾太鉱山では比較的多く出たらしい。ヤフオクなんかで「尾太」と検索すると、水晶や菱マンガン鉱など、観賞用として愛鉱家の元に保管されていたものが、けっこう古物市場にでているようである。

Several cubic galena crystals gather to form a specimen like a modern art. Tiny crystals of pyrite are sprinkled over it, as if Tinker Bell had done. Sphalerite is also seen a little. The surface of galena is mostly smooth and lustrous. Some of the galena crystals are elongated in one direction. The top one shows a skeletal (hopper) crystal. This is a specimen mined at Oppu around 1970, several years before closing. It would generally be rare to form such sculptural crystals in hydrothermal veins, but we can often see good specimens from Oppu mine in market.
