Wurtzite from Hosokura

Hosokura Mine, Uguisuzawa, Kurihara City, Miyagi, Japan
Size: 84 × 58 × 40 mm / Weight: 300 g

Fibrous crystals of wurtzite radially aggregate with galena. The color seems to include dark-green, reminding me of Japanese nori. Hosokura's wurtzite is said to totally be altered into sphalerite. Therefore, this is a specimen of sphalerite pseudomorph after wurtzite, as is shown in the label of Bon Chigaku Company.

The Hosokura mine, located in the northern part of Miyagi prefecture, mainly produced lead and zinc from large-scale hydrothermal veins. Mining began at least from the 17th century, and continued to 1987 operated by Mitsubishi. Now, Hosokura Metal Mining Company carries on lead smelting at the same place. Mineral specimens from Hosokura are relatively rare despite the mine's scale and history. A banded ore of galena, sphalerite, and fluorite is famous. Secondary minerals also existed, some of which can be seen in the Wada collection, University Museum of University of Tokyo. Fibrous sphalerite after wurtzite was not very common in Hosokura's zinc ores but seen in several major veins with chalcedony, marcasite, and melnikovite (amorphous pyrite).
