チバニアン Chibanian

東京・上野の国立科学博物館に展示されている、千葉県市原市養老川沿いの「千葉セクション」のはぎとり標本。いまから77.4万年前の地磁気の逆転が記録されている層は、この写真のもうすこし上のあたりになる。
A stratum specimen stripped from the Chiba Section along Yoro River, Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, displayed at National Museum of Nature and Science, Ueno, Tokyo. The layer recording the geomagnetic field reversal 774,000 years ago is just the upper part out of this photo.

先週17日に、いまから77.4万年前から12.9万年前までの地質時代（中期更新世）が、めでたく「チバニアン（千葉時代）」と命名された。そこで翌日、上野の国立科学博物館にいってみたところ、チバニアン命名と題する説明板がさっそく用意されていた。仕事が早い。さぞ展示の前は人だかりかと思ったが、そうでもなかったので、人々の関心はそこまで高くないのかもしれない。

A geological age from 774,000 years ago to 129,000 years ago (Middle Pleistocene) was named Chibanian on Friday 17th. I went to National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno on the next day to see a new panel explaining what is Chibanian. There was unexpectedly no crowd in front of the panel.
